Your TI-84 is acting up. Maybe it's throwing syntax errors on equations you know are right. Maybe it's running sluggish, graphing lines that shouldn't be there, or just doing something weird you can't explain. Before you panic — or spend money on a replacement — a reset will fix most of this. This guide covers three scenarios: a standard RAM reset (handles 90% of problems), a full memory wipe (when you want a completely clean slate), and a hard battery reset for when the screen won't respond at all.
One warning before you start: resetting your TI-84 is permanent. Custom programs, saved lists, stored variables, and any formulas you've typed in will be gone. If that matters to you, write them down first.
What Kind of Reset Do You Actually Need?
Not all resets are the same, and the difference matters.

This is what fixes strange errors, corrupted settings, and most slowdown issues. It does not delete apps you've installed.
Full Memory Reset ("All Memory" on CE models) wipes everything, including apps. Use this if you're handing the calculator to someone else, preparing for a standardized test that prohibits stored programs, or if the RAM reset didn't solve your problem.
Hard Battery Reset is a physical fix for a completely frozen or unresponsive screen. This one doesn't go through menus — it's done by removing a battery.
How to Perform a RAM Reset (Recommended First Step)
This takes about 30 seconds.
Turn the calculator on
Press the ON button. If the screen is completely blank and unresponsive, skip to the battery reset section below.
Open the Memory menu

Go to Reset
A list of memory options will appear. Scroll down to 7: Reset... and press ENTER, or just press the 7 key directly.
Choose "All RAM..."
You'll land on the RAM tab by default. Select 1: All RAM... and press ENTER. This clears variables, lists, and temporary settings — the most common source of calculator bugs.
Confirm
A warning screen appears. Scroll to 2: Reset and press ENTER. The calculator will display "RAM Cleared" and restart.
Done. Try whatever was giving you trouble before and see if it's fixed.
How to Wipe Everything (Full Memory Reset — TI-84 CE)
If you have a TI-84 Plus CE and want to delete apps as well — or if the RAM reset didn't help — follow steps 1–3 above, then instead of staying on the RAM tab, press the right arrow key to move to the ALL tab. Select 1: All Memory..., confirm on the next screen, and the calculator will erase everything and restart fresh.
Note: This option is only available on the TI-84 Plus CE. On older TI-84 Plus and TI-84 Plus Silver Edition models, the RAM reset is as far as the software can take you. What to Do If the Calculator Is Completely Frozen
If the screen is locked up and no buttons respond, you can't navigate any menus. You'll need to do a physical reset instead.
Remove cover
Flip the calculator over and remove the battery cover.
Take out a battery
Take out one of the four AAA batteries.
Hold ON button
Press and hold the ON button for about 10 seconds.
Power on
Put the battery back in, replace the cover, and power the calculator on.
This forces the hardware to restart. Once the calculator is back on, go through the software RAM reset (Steps 1–5 in the first section) to clear whatever caused the freeze in the first place.
Common Issues a Reset Will Fix
- Syntax errors on valid equations — usually a corrupted variable stored under a letter like X or Y that's overwriting your input
- Graphing lines or curves you didn't enter — leftover equations in the Y= menu or a mode setting that carried over
- Slow response when pressing buttons — temporary memory overload, often after running a complex program
- "ERR: MEMORY" messages — RAM is full; a reset clears it immediately
- Strange number outputs — a variable is storing an unexpected value and affecting your calculations
Things a Reset Won't Fix
A reset is a software fix. It won't help with:
- A cracked or damaged screen — the display itself is broken
- Keys that physically don't respond — hardware issue, not software
- A dead battery — replace all four AAA batteries and the round lithium backup battery if the clock keeps resetting
If none of the steps above resolve your issue and the calculator hardware seems intact, it's worth contacting Texas Instruments support. The TI-84 line has been around long enough that replacement parts and repair options are widely available.
